Quotes by Caloy Bueno

The problem with this 'quote' is that it is not complete ~ not the whole saying of George Santayana (American philosopher). The whole thing that Santayana said is this:

"Progress, far from consisting in change, depends on retentiveness. When change is absolute there remains no being to improve and no direction is set for possible improvement: and when experience is not retained, as among savages, infancy is perpetual. Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."

Note that there is an emphasis on retentiveness. Ms. Angel Locsin emphasizes change (i.e., the overthrow of the Marcos regime, and the pursuit of "change" that is without direction or purpose, but just in keeping with their liberal mindset, caprices and whims). They abhor everything Marcos (i.e., do not retain anything from the Marcos regime ~ only that they have overcome and "changed" it to what they want: "freedom and democracy"). What they retain is only their hatred of it ~ hence saying that not remembering it (as they do in the way that they do ~ hating it!) means being "condemned" to repeat it.

However, it is a fact that during the Duterte dispensation, martial law was indeed repeated ~ for Mindanao ~ and even extended for a year. And it could only be done because it is in fact allowed by the 1987 Constitution ~ which worked out for the benefit of the people of Mindanao in facing the Marawi emergency. Should the Duterte administration be "condemned" because of it ~ or, that it should be interpreted to mean the current regime had been "condemned" to repeat the "mistakes" of the past?

The quote is also altered ~ "Those who do not learn from history..." Ms. Locsin was born in 1985 ~ martial law was already lifted previously (1981) ~ and she never even actually experienced anything of that era. Yet she liberally uses a (mangled) quote to force a "lesson" that is misplaced and even misquoted ~ if only to put across the message that the possibility of any Marcos becoming ascendant again in our governance should be taken as a warning or a threat.

But the only threat there is in the context of this subject today is a bigoted hatred of historical events and political developments. Her opinion that "Marcos Is Not A Hero" is certainly her right. But it doesn't necessarily mean that she is right ~ even if "bolstered" by a (mis)quote . . .
