A Meditation on Life

Lifted from Caloy Bueno

#PagMayTime ~ A Meditation on Life (first reposted in 2020):

Everyone has a purpose in life. Whether or not that purpose is clear to everyone is part of the lifelong process of discernment and self-actualization. The unending search for self-fulfillment takes one on countless journeys on many roads; along the way, one may find some special meaning, some bits and pieces of the purpose of one's existence. We may have our own idea of the desired destination for the journey of our life; however we all end up back to where we ostensibly came from ~ dust to dust, ashes to ashes...

Our existence in human society is defined and influenced by our individual strengths, weaknesses, our past deeds or omissions, as well as aspirations, plans and actions for our own future. We form society according to how we see and want it ~ but we are also formed by society according to the many forces that we largely cannot see or control, until its effects are upon us and we either react and struggle against it, or simply get out of the way and not get involved. Whether we do so consciously or not, we are all part of the whole system of human civilization that has evolved subject always to the law of diminishing returns ~ even as human ingenuity and technology constantly push the frontiers of knowledge farther into the reaches of human imagination...

In the human struggle called 'life' we are mainly alone, although we strive never to be lonely simply because we crave forever to be part of something greater than only our own selves. Our moments of happiness ~ fleeting as they are ~ testify to the indomitable human spirit that becomes pronounced in its individuality, but only within the parameters and nurturing environment of community, the community of human social existence. In those pure moments of human community and happiness we partake of the substance of some universal and inexhaustible reservoir of positive energy, which confirms our deepest beliefs of the goodness of life as the physical as well as spiritual representation of the quantum whole of our known universe...

Buddha gives us a saying that pretty much tells us what life is ~ “Resolve to be tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving, and tolerant with the weak and wrong. Sometime in your life, you will have been all of these.” But if all we want in this life is to be happy, then also heed Buddha's advice: “There is no path to happiness: Happiness IS the path.”

On the other hand, our very own Dr. Jose Rizal also left us some wise words that we should remember: “Life is a very serious thing and only those with intelligence and heart go through it worthily. To live is to be among men, and to be among men is to struggle. But this struggle is not a brutal and material struggle with men alone ~ it is a struggle with them, with one’s self, with their passions and one’s own, with errors and preoccupations. It is an eternal struggle with a smile on the lips and tears in the heart. On this battlefield man has no better weapon than his intelligence, no other force but his heart.”
