THEY FOIST THE BOGEY!

Lifted from Edwin Jamora

REYNA'S TRANSLATION OF PANELO'S "THEY FOIST THE BOGEY!"

I listed about 10 phrases which I thought you might have difficulty understanding. Ganito gawin naten. Divide naten in half. So, eto muna yong first half.

1. Foist the bogey - Foist is to introduce or insert surreptitiously or without warrant

2. Contemplated law - You already know this in Tagalog.

3. Zip the lips - You know this one too! Zip is to close. Be quiet or say nothing.

4. Intimidate into sepulchral silence - Sepulchral is a tomb or interment. Eternity. Intimidate is tinatakot to the highest degree.

5. Specter of prolonged detention - para bang something is hanging in your head. Ganun.

So dun sa first half, he is talking about some kind of ghost that was let go off to fool people by explaining to them that there was something inserted in the bill (contemplated law) without any warrant or surreptitiously, to silence critics and human rights activists, and to scare or intimidate them into silence. Which is a complete fabrication explained sa second half.

We’re not talking about ordinary silence here. We’re talking about sepulchral silence which is morbid in nature, more like eternal silence. Because if you start talking, there’s the specter of prolonged detention.

Specter - in other words, if you start talking there is the potential for you to be arrested and detained for a long, long time.

Ok?

Now, let's go to the other half.

6. Advocacy a falsehood – You all know this one. It just means, it’s a lie.

7. Cerebrally challenged – This one means, dumb, dense, or unintelligent.

8. Intellectual insight – The capacity to think deeper and look into the overall concept.

9. Oblivious of the monstrosity – It means, zero ability to comprehend the gravity of things

10. Grave infinitesimal consequences – The resulting damage could be catastrophic. The mother of all destruction!

So, ganito. Sabi nya, it’s not only a lie but it is dumb because the Constitution says that the prime duty of the government is to serve and protect the people, therefore, why would the government silence those that he is protecting? Instead, in truth, the Anti-Terrorism Bill is actually a fulfillment of what’s written in the Constitution.

According to him, these people criticizing the bill are biased. They are not judicious. They’re only thinking of what’s beneficial to them.

Of course naman noh? We know that their end is Communism. But according to him, they’re not just biased. They are not forward looking. They can’t see the future. They don’t see the big picture. Ganun.

Oblivious of the monstrosity – they are clueless as to how big of a problem terrorism is! No idea at all!

Infinitesimal consequences – from the root infinite - walang katapusan, or hanggang sa dulu nang walang hanggan where, if terrorism occurs, God knows what that would entail.

In other words, if by chance one terrorist act happened in the Philippines, the consequences could be the mother of all destruction. It’ll be horrific and catastrophic.

There!

Alam nyo kasi si Mr. Panelo, when he speaks, he loves to use colorful language and superflous statements. Mabuti yan, para nakakalkal mga isip naten! Di na naten need mag-basa nang OpEd nang New York Times to add fastastical vocab sa utak naten.

I hope I was able to do justice sa artful statements ni Mr. Panelo hahahaha!

Tse!

Nga pala. Aside from Mr. Panelo, I also love to read Mr. Juan Ponce Enrile. Ang galing galing den nya magsulat.
