"Why is life so unfair?"

Life isn't fair ~ nor unfair.  It just is, or it's whatever it is ~ essentially an unbroken cycle of cause-and-effect (from the smallest insignificant thing to the biggest catastrophe imaginable), an ever-flowing current of change through time and circumstances, which grip and affect everyone equally and without exception. There is no fairness nor unfairness to it ~ because fairness is just another measure of mankind's ego, that demands satisfaction according to intellectual/rational or even emotional and spiritual standards (all invented by man). So depending on how we see ~ and more importantly, how and what we ourselves make it ~ such is life . . .

If you ask various people about whether life is fair or not, of course you will get different answers ~ all with competing perspectives and standpoints, even also with repetitive inanities, or perhaps arrogant impertinence. Thus, for people life actually isn't so much about whether or not it is really fair ~ but rather, how they can get ahead and stay in the lead (to be among the very first to get all the opportunities, goodies, benefits, perks, privileges, liberties, etc.), before they get themselves mired in the pack, vainly and unsuccessfully trying to 'get their fair share' among all the other people, who have the same hopelessly flawed views of 'fairness'!

Human society ~ man's civilization ~ is a tenuous (at best) middle ground for human interactions to be played out on an inherently-skewed playing field (due to man's systems, laws, principles, values, norms and mores, etc.), or (at worst) an open, anything-goes battleground in a war of ruthless attrition, where what counts toward one's humanity is whether or not one still has a conscience or is still able to somewhat exercise that conscience. That's the simplest reason why people who have a 'killer instinct' are the most revered or admired ~ they're known as the alphas, lordships and majesties, political kingpins or business moguls ~ they have power over the rest, who just wait to be told what to do, to be, to dream and aspire for. For most of them, conscience is a luxury they can hardly afford (not if they want to maintain their lead and competitiveness in life). But paying it lip service is the quick, easy and conventional way toward social acceptance ~ it even reinforces or enhances their charisma and reputations . . .

So, for example you may ask ~ why can't we improve our way of life? For one thing, historically our way of life had always been mired in a socioeconomic, politico-cultural, even religious colonial dictatorship that generally treated people as unequally unworthy. If we were treated as unequally worthy, that would reflect simple reality. Or if we were equally unworthy, that would have led all of us to rise up and strike down the arrogance of such a shameless dictatorship. But no ~ we were treated unequally unworthy ~ which gave everyone the chance to prove otherwise, thereby encouraging the unfairness of the colonial dictatorship we put and wore upon our own necks like a kind and blessed yoke. Which begs the question ~ why do we still think like cattle, even until today?

And for another reason, we can hardly get out of the rut we are in as a people because we still practice the same things and basically live the same way as before ~ bowing to the inevitable, and begging for mercy and favorable dispensation or redemption or salvation and whatever is up for grabs ~ simply because we know nothing else. What we do know, however, is to make it hard for anyone else to get out of the rut we are all in ~ which in 'today speak' is just rooting for and cheering on the winners, the privileged, the pretty, the godly, the mighty, the wealthy, the classy, the sophisticated, the strong, the bright, the skillful: In short, anyone who is NOT unequally unworthy, but rather worthy of whatever it is that is won ~ even if unfairly . . .

Because, as we only know too well ~ life is unfair . . .
