MSU: SURVIVAL

Lifted from FB

MSU,  my temporary Alma Mater

Every MSU Marawi graduate shares the same love and hate relationship with our alma matter.

Yes our tuition fee back then was probably one of the cheapest in the country, but the enrolment process was also the most inefficient. If you plan to change a subject later on, just forget about it.

Yes we have amazing professors and instructors but we also got leaking classrooms. There was even one time a literal cow entered our room in the middle of the class. You never know who or what will join you in class next.

Yes we get cold and foggy weather all year round that looks scenic and feels cozy at first until you realize you dont have dry clothes left to wear. You learn to wear your clothes atleast three times a week. Taking a bath is a daily ice bucket challenge.

Yes we were studying in a beautiful campus overlooking the majestic Lake Lanao with a mountain backdrop that looks like a Sleeping Beauty, but  it wasnt also the safest. Gunshots and kidnappings felt like just part of the college experience. You get used to things you never should be.

The line ‘I survived MSU Marawi’ is not just a metaphor for surviving the academic challenges of studying in MSU. Graduating in MSU Marawi literally is surving life. Students from different parts of Mindanao leave their home and risk their safety to get quality but affordable education that MSU Marawi offers. Some students will risk it all.

As I learn about what happened in my alma matter this morning, I am reminded of what ‘surviving’ means in MSU Marawi. I am reminded of how hard and at times how scary it can be. I am reminded of the things I hate about the school.

But, today, I am also reminded of how the school is a proof that people, regardless of their cultural and religious beliefs, can co-exist and have access to the same quality education - why MSU Marawi exists in the first place. I am reminded of why I am still a proud graduate of this university.

MSU Marawi has definitely come a long way. But today’s incident is a reminder that it has a long way to go especially in terms of keeping the university safe. Students should never get used to the sound of gunshots or worse, bombs. Studying in MSU Marawi should never feel like surviving for your life.
