Rizaliana Series # 13🇵🇭

The Rizals is considered one of the biggest families during their time. Domingo Lam-co, the family’s paternal ascendant was full-blooded Chinese who came to the Philippines from Amoy, China in the closing years of the 17th century and married a Chinese half-breed by the name of Inez de la Rosa.

Researchers revealed that the Mercado-Rizal family had also traces of Japanese, Spanish, Malay and even Negrito blood aside from Chinese.

Jose Rizal’s Paternal Ancestry🇵🇭

Domingo Lam-co’s parents are Siang-co and Zun-nio.

Domingo Lam-co (born 1662), baptized and married Inez de la Rosa.

Inez de la Rosa’s grandparents are Chinco and Zun-nio. Her father is Agustin Chinco, baptized 1692 and married to Jacinta Rafaela. Her brothers and sisters are Magdalena Vergara, Josepha, Cristobal de la Trinidad, Juan Bautista and Francisco Hong-sun.

Domingo Lam-co and Inez de la Rosa’s siblings are Josepha Didnio (died 1741) and Francisco Mercado married to Bernarda Monicha on May 26, 1771.

Francisco Mercado and Bernarda Monicha’s siblings are Juan Mercado and Clemente Mercado. Juan at 22, married Cirila Alejandra, daughter of Domingo Lam-co’s Chinese godson Siong-co.

Juan Mercado and Cirila Alejandra’s siblings are Gavino, Potenciana (who never married, died 1847), Leoncio, Fausto, Barcelisa (who became the wife of Herminigildo Austria), Gabriel, Julian, Gregorio, Fernando, Casimiro, Petrona (who married Gregorio Neri), Tomasa, Cornelia, and Francisco (Jose Rizal’s father).

Jose Rizal’s Maternal Ancestry🇵🇭

Teodoro Alonzo’s great-grandparent is Captain Gregorio Alonzo (died 1794).

Gregorio’s son is Captain Cipriano Alonzo (died 1805).

Cipriano’s son is Lorenzo Alberto Alonzo (born 1790, died 1854) married to Maria Florentina Alejandro (born 1771, died 1817). Maria’s father is Captain Mariano Alejandro.

Lorenzo Alberto and Maria’s siblings are Narcisa (married to Santiago Mujer), Teodora (Jose Rizal’s mother, baptized November 18, 1827, Gregorio, Manuel and Jose.

Lorenzo Alberto got acquainted with Brigida de Quintos and their son is Manuel de Quintos who married Regina Ochoa (widow of Facundo de Leyva.

Regina Ochoa’s grandfather is Policarpio Ochoa. Her parents Estanislao Manuel Ochoa and Mariquita Ochoa. Regina’s brothers are Jose and Diego de Castro Luseria.

Jose Rizal’s Family🇵🇭

Jose Rizal came from a 13-member family consisting of his parents Francisco Mercado II and Teodora Alonzo Realonda, and nine sisters and one brother.

Francisco Mercado (May 11, 1818-January 5, 1898), father of Jose Rizal who was the youngest of 13 offsprings of Juan and Cirila Mercado. Born in Binan, Laguna, studied in San Jose College, Manila.

Teodora Alonzo (November 9, 1827-August 16, 1911), mother of Jose Rizal who was the second child of Lorenzo Alonzo and Brigida de Quintos. She studied at the Colegio de Santa Rosa. She was a business-minded woman, courteous, religious, hard-working and well-read. She was born in Santa Cruz, Manila.

Saturnina Rizal (June 4, 1850-September 14, 1913), eldest child of the Rizal-Alonzo marriage, married to Manuel Timoteo Hidalgo of Tanauan, Batangas with five siblings: Amelia, Alfredo, Abelardo, Adela and Augusto.

Paciano Rizal (March 9, 1851-April 13, 1930), only brother of Jose Rizal and the second child, studied at San Jose College in Manila; became a farmer and later General in the Philippine Revolution. Paciano’s daughter is Emiliana Dacena Rizal.

Narcisa Rizal (October 29, 1852-June 24, 1939), the third child, married to Antonio Lopez of Morong, Rizal; a teacher and musician.

Olympia Rizal (1855-August 31, 1887) the fourth child, married to Silvestre Ubaldo, died due to childbirth. Her son is Aristeo Ubaldo.

Lucia Rizal (1857-1919), fifth child, married to Matriano Herbosa gifted with five kids: Jose, Estanislao, Concepcion, Patrocino and Teodosio.

Maria Rizal (1859-1945) sixth child, married to Daniel Faustino Cruz of Binan, Laguna with five kids: Petrona, Encarnacion, Paz, Mauricio and Prudencio.

Jose Rizal (June 19, 1861-December 30, 1896), the second son and the seventh child, was executed by the Spaniards in Bagumbayan.

Concepcion Rizal (1862-1865), the eighth child, died at the age of 3.

Josefa Rizal (1865-1945), the ninth child, an epileptic and died a spinster.

Trinidad Rizal (June 6, 1868-1951), the tenth child, died a spinster and the last of the family to die.

Soledad Rizal (1870-1929), the youngest child married to Pantaleon Quintero.🇵🇭
