NO GREATER LOVE
On April 11, 2016, in a sprawling field in Taguig City where thousands gathered to hear him speak, Rodrigo Roa Duterte stood before his countrymen and declared, “I am just an ordinary person, but my God, no one can question my love for my country.”
It was this same love that moved him to leave the comforts of his hometown and confront the deeper ills that plagued the Philippines he so dearly cared for.
It was this same love that fueled his relentless fight against the worsening illegal drug crisis that gripped the nation.
It was this same love that compelled him not to turn a blind eye nor a deaf ear to the corruption and plunder that surrounded the national budget for 2025.
It was this same love that led him to surrender to his fate, taken unlawfully to The Hague, stripped of due process, and forced to stand before a foreign tribunal, in defiance of what our own laws demand.
Rodrigo Roa Duterte has always loved his country above family, above self.
And now, his detention in a distant land has sparked a global outcry among Filipinos who know, deep in their hearts, that their Beloved Leader has been wronged.
But a vision as bold as his—of a Philippines free from corruption and suffering—could never be realized if men of great calling simply stood by while a few burned the nation to the ground in their greed and thirst for power.
His love was far greater than what his frail body could bear. It was his soul, his spirit, overflowing with a selfless, unwavering devotion.
A love that dared to dream of a future where the Philippines was no longer ravaged by corruption, where the poor were no longer hungry or left to die unattended in neglected public hospitals, where innocent lives were no longer taken by emboldened criminals.
Rodrigo Duterte hoped for a Philippines as envisioned by the great men and heroes who came before him. A nation delivered from the grip of true evil.
He may now be confined within the cold walls of the ICC, but his love, its fire, its hope, its vision endures.
On this Resurrection Sunday, we are reminded of a love that places others above self. The kind of love we’ve witnessed in the most vilified man in the eyes of mainstream media and the selfish politicians. Men who could never command the kind of love Rodrigo Roa Duterte inspired.
Ironically, the irreverent man who gave everything for his people without pretense, without reservation, walked the path of the Savior, giving flesh and blood to John 15:13:
“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”
John 15:13 (King James Version)
Have a blessed Easter Sunday, everyone.
