SMALL CONNECTIONS

Lifted from Nereo Cajilig Lujan

SOMETHING PERSONAL — The passing of National Artist Nora Aunor brought back quiet memories for many, especially for those whose everyday lives were touched by her work in film and music.

For me, it reminded me of someone special from my childhood – Nene Angeles Miranda.

Nene was with us in the 1970s as our helper, during a time when life moved more slowly and our days were shaped by FM radio songs, komiks stories and magazines filled with movie star photos.

She was young then, full of energy and warmth, and like many in those days, a devoted fan of Nora Aunor and Tirso Cruz III.

Nene was a true “Guy and Pip” follower.

She would carefully collect clippings and photos from magazines, keeping them like small treasures. It wasn’t just admiration – it was something that brought joy and color to her everyday life.

When she later married Nong Pido Laguna, she carried that fondness with her. She even named her children after her idols: her son Tirso, and her daughter Leonora – who she, of course, calls Nora.

Even after she moved on and started her own family, Nene stayed in touch.

She would visit us in the poblacion of Cabatuan, and those visits always felt like reconnecting with family.

My parents loved her deeply – and we all do. She wasn’t just someone who worked in our home; she was part of us. She is part of us.

Now 80, and a widow since Nong Pido passed away in 2017, Nene still holds a special place in our hearts.

Looking back, I’m reminded how people like Nene – who cared for us, shared our joys and routines, and became part of our growing up years – left a lasting imprint.

They helped shape the comfort and warmth we remember from home.

Remembering Nora Aunor also brings to mind people like Nene Angeles, whose simple joys and quiet presence made a difference in the lives they touched.

Sometimes, it’s in these small connections that we find the most meaning.
