President Bongbong Marcos swiftly appointed Mayor Benjie Magalong to the Independent Commission for Infrastructure, banking on his reputation to root out corruption. But once the spotlight turned to Martin Romualdez—Marcos’ own cousin—the President suddenly raised questions about Magalong’s “conflict of interest.”

The timing is no coincidence. Is this really about justice, or is BBM scrambling to protect family secrets before they unravel? Let’s not be surprised if, when all is said and done, the President’s own name keeps popping up. After all, in Philippine politics, nothing says “clean investigation” like keeping it all in the family.

But Magalong raced him to the finish line. He resigned. He saw that this Commission wasn’t as independent as it was named after all.
