TRUE HERO

From Philippine Marine Corps

DID YOU KNOW?

That COL ARIEL O QUERUBIN PN(M) is one of the two living Marine heroes who is a recipient of the Medal of Valor Award? He earned the highest military award in combat for his act of gallantry as the Commanding Officer of MBLT - 1 who fought in the Battle of Kauswagan during the All-Out War Campaign in Central Mindanao in 2000.

Lieutenant Colonel Ariel O Querubin PN(M) led 117 Marines of MBLT-1 in a dangerous mission to seize the powerful rebel headquarters located in Brgy Inudaran, Kauswagan, Lanao del Norte on March 18, 2000. They came under heavy fire from entrenched rebels. Despite darkness and intense enemy fire from machine guns, rockets, mortars, and snipers, Querubin held the line and directed a Special Operations Squad to locate the enemy camp for artillery support.

Despite low ammunition and increasing casualties on their side, Lt Col Querubin’s leadership drove his men to fight ferociously which collapses the enemy’s final defenses, seizing weapons and valuable intelligence. The capture of the enemy’s headquarters resulted in the neutralization of their most strategic area for operations. LtCol Querubin’s courageous action freed Lanao del Norte from an estimated annual rebel extortion of P38 million. Lieutenant Colonel Querubin distinguished himself in combat in the finest tradition of Filipino soldiers with this valiant deed.
