GOD INTERVENES
By Rob Rances
THERE’S HOPE FOR A PEOPLE LIVING UNDER AN OPPRESSIVE RULER…
Because God intervenes.
Throughout Scripture, one truth rises again and again. God never abandons His people under unjust kings.
When rulers become oppressive, corrupt, or violent, God does not stay silent. He steps into history, intervenes in impossible moments, and vindicates those who trust in Him.
It has always been this way.
From Egypt to Babylon, from wicked kings to hostile empires, the story of God is the story of a faithful Defender who knows exactly how to deal with those who abuse power.
WHEN RULERS OPPRESS, GOD RISES.
In Egypt, Pharaoh hardened his heart, but God broke the power of the greatest empire of its time to free His people.
In Canaan, rulers mocked the God of Israel, but God toppled cities and idols that stood against His truth.
In the time of the Judges, every time wicked leaders rose, God raised deliverers—Deborah, Gideon, Samson—to shatter oppression and restore justice.
Under kings like Ahab and Manasseh, when evil spread across the land, God sent prophets with fire in their bones to confront tyrants and call the people back to Him.
In Babylon, where His people wept in exile, God humbled the proud and lifted the faithful—shutting lions’ mouths, preserving His servants,
and reminding empires that heaven still rules.
Over and over, Scripture reminds us that human rulers may oppress, but God’s rule is eternal.
He does not forget the cries of the afflicted.
And when emotions fail, Scripture gives us a prayer: Psalm 109.
It is not a gentle psalm. It is the cry of a heart wounded by injustice, a soul crying out against a corrupt and violent enemy.
It is a reminder that when the oppressed have no earthly defender, God Himself becomes their Advocate.
This psalm teaches us that:
• We are allowed to bring righteous indignation before God.
• We are allowed to name the injustice we witness.
• We are allowed to ask God to dismantle the wickedness that destroys families, communities, and nations.
Psalm 109 is a prayer of spiritual warfare. The kind prayed by those who refuse to let oppression have the final word.
When David prayed this, he wasn’t seeking personal revenge. He was asking God to act where human justice failed.
And God did.
This is the hope for every generation living under oppressive rule—
God sees.
Even when rulers hide their sins behind power. God hears.
Even when the oppressed whisper their prayers through tears. God acts.
And, yes, even when it feels like nothing is moving.
He may intervene swiftly, or He may allow unjust rulers to rise high enough that their downfall becomes undeniable and complete.
But intervene, He always does.
So take courage, for the stories of the Bible are not ancient relics. They are patterns. They are promises. They are blueprints for our own time.
When a nation groans under corruption, when the righteous are slandered, when leaders use their power to destroy instead of protect, God does not stand aside.
He raises Daniels and Esthers.
He sends prophets with courage.
He opens Red Seas no one expected to part.
And when His people pray Psalm 109 with a clean heart, with humility and surrender, He moves in ways no human ruler can stop.
So stand firm. Pray boldly. Call on the God who delivers.
If God brought down Pharaoh, silenced Nebuchadnezzar, rebuked Ahab, and toppled kingdoms with a whisper…
Then no modern oppressor is beyond His reach.
God has always been the defender of the afflicted and the dismantler of evil power.
And, today, He still is.
