Eala Touches Down in PH for Historic Philippine Women’s Open

Philippine sports fans received a pleasant surprise early Wednesday evening as the country's tennis ace Alex Eala landed at the NAIA Terminal 3.

Accompanied by her parents Mike and Rizza and coach Joan Bosch, the 20-year-old Filipina sports sensation is back home to participate in the first-ever Philippine Women's Open, a WTA 125 event that will be held at the newly-refurbished Rizal Memorial Tennis Center from January 26-31.

Eala touched down in Manila straight from a landmark campaign in the 2026 Australian Open in Melbourne where she made her official debut in the singles and doubles events.

Upon arrival, she confirmed her participation in the tournament and expressed hope that local fans would turn out and support the event.

"Yes, I will be playing next week. Im looking forward to it and I hope people can show up and support the Pinays," Eala said.

"It's a huge milestone in Philippine tennis, and I think its a big deal for all of us Filipina tennis players," Eala added.

Welcoming back Eala was PHILTA Secretary General John Rey Tiangco who is also part of the organizing committee for the PWO.

PWO organizers earlier secured Eala's participation by awarding her a wildcard entry to ensure that local fans get to see her in action.

"It's been a dream to have a home tournament," Eala shared recently. "I'm so happy that it's going to bring a lot of inspiration for the girls back home".

Travelers at the airport immediately recognized Eala, and some even broke into applause and called out her name to celebrate her international success as she made her way to the immigration counter.

Meantime, qualifying matches for the PWO singles draw will start this weekend. Tickets to the event are available via smtickets.

Welcome home, Alex!
