Mayon in slumber is a beautiful sight to behold, but Mayon in fury is a terrifying beast to behold.

MAYON VOLCANO: A Timeless Beauty and a Childhood Dream

Of all the natural wonders in the Bicol Region, Mayon Volcano remains my favorite.

Even as a child, I was captivated by its image seeing it on postcards, dreaming of the day I’d witness its grandeur in person. And when that moment finally came, it took my breath away. Standing before its majestic presence, I felt pure awe and delight.

Rising 2,463 meters above sea level, Mayon is famed as the "World’s Most Perfect Cone Volcano" for its near-flawless symmetry. But beyond its beauty lies a tale as dramatic as its eruptions.

According to Bicolano mythology, Mayon emerged from the grave of the legendary lovers Magayon and Panganoron. Named after Daragang Magayon (Beautiful Lady), the volcano is said to be the resting place of the beloved princess-heroine. Locals believe the clouds that often shroud its peak are Panganoron, forever embracing his lost love, a poignant story that has endured through generations.

Yet, Mayon is as fierce as it is beautiful. As the most active volcano in the Philippines, it has erupted countless times since 1616, with its deadliest eruption in 1814 claiming 1,200 lives. Despite its dangers, people still gather in awe whenever it rumbles, drawn by its raw power and breathtaking spectacle.

Mayon is more than just a volcano. It is a symbol of love, legend, and nature’s untamed beauty. And for me, it will always be a cherished memory, a dream turned reality.

Lava out

Lumalabas ang nag-aapoy na lava mula sa bunganga ng Mount Mayon at natutupok ang dinaraanan nito. First time kong maka-witness physically ng ganito.
