FROM SOLO TO SHARED SECURITY

For the first time in Philippine history, the Vice President of the Republic of the Philippines will no longer have her own, chosen and desired military protection unit. 🥲

AFP Chief of Staff Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. has officially deactivated the Vice Presidential Security and Protection Group (VPSPG) - the unit tasked with protecting Vice President Inday Sara Duterte, and all VPs before her, from Salvador Laurel to Leni Robredo.

An AFP source on condition of anonymity showed to The Manila Times a document containing General Order 196, issued as early as February 10, 2025 confirming that the VPSPG indeed has been disbanded. In its place, a new unit was created - the AFP Security and Protection Group (ASPG).

But here’s the catch.

The ASPG won’t serve the VP exclusively because the security unit will now handle security for other VIPs too, depending on the orders of the Department of National Defense (DND).

Does this mean, no more dedicated bodyguards for the VP? While the President has the PSG focused solely on him and his family, the Vice President now shares a security unit with others. It’s like going from having your own detail to a VIP security pool.

Another thing is the scope and response - with ASPG handling multiple VIPs, there’s concern it might not be as quick or specialized when it comes to emergency response or high-risk scenarios.

How about the timing? Given the growing political tension between the President and the Vice President, many observers are asking: Is this just a structural change? Or is it something more?

Finally, the original VPSPG had 350 personnel...now, reports say that the ASPG has only 329 troops - shared across various assignments.

So here’s the big question: Is VP Sara actually safer under this new setup? Or has her level of priority been quietly downgraded? 🙏
