CHAVACANO: EXTINCT LANGUAGE

Image
27 December 2024 Lifted from Joel Lopez  Did you know that Ermita, Manila, once had its own dialect called "Ermiteño", which is now extinct? Ermiteño, also known as Chavacano de Ermita, was a Spanish-based creole language once spoken in the Ermita district of Manila, Philippines. Sadly, it became extinct after World War II. The reasons for its disappearance are complex, but the destruction of Ermita during the war and the subsequent displacement of its speakers played a significant role. The lack of extensive research on this language further contributes to the difficulty in understanding its full history and characteristics.     Limited Linguistic Records   Due to its extinction, information about Ermiteño Chavacano is scarce. Existing knowledge comes primarily from fragmented literary works and limited linguistic samples. One such sample, from a book titled "Pidgins and Creoles" by John Holm, offers a glimpse into the language's structure and vocabulary....

PILIPIG

26 December 2024 PINIPI A SINANTA by Duoi Ampilan  We call it #Pinipi among the Maguindanaon people in the Bangsamoro. It is #Pinipig in Filipino 🇵🇭. It is made from young rice flakes.  There are many ways to produce it but with our featured Pinipi, this is how our folks do it in the villages of Maguindanao. The young rice is harvested while the grains (Palay) are still green. It is fried (dry, no oil) in a #Kala (frying pan). The fried palay is then pounded using the traditional #Lesung and #Lendu (large wooden mortar and pestel) to separate the grains from the chaffs.  The best Pinipi is from the #Pulot (glutinous or sticky rice) because of its both aroma and taste. We love the way our folks prepare it traditionally in the village. The Pinipi is mixed with #Pëti (p'ti) or fresh coconut milk with brown sugar and we call that process as #Sinantan. Nowadays, some do use condensed milk. However, the fresh coconut milk is healthier and even tastier. Pinipi brings back ou...

LOOKING BACK 2004

Image
26 December 2024 Foreword: I would never forget this day.... the mood of the day out in Mona Vale Beach suddenly turned sullen and there was something in the air that augured an awful storm. The road back to the city was chaotic. Everyone was driving in a hurry. Thanks God we came home safe and scared we couldn't explain, and the moment we turned the TV on for news, lo and behold, this horrific scenario was all flashed out on the screen. Admin./LCD #History: 2004 Asian Earthquake & Tsunami by Duoi Ampilan,  Humanitarian Worker  On 26 Dec 2004, a huge strong earthquake with a Magnitude 9.2 struck the west coast of Aceh in Indonesia at 7:58am local time. That undersea mega earthquake is known as the Sumatra–Andaman earthquake and the 2004 Asian Tsunami. It is the deadliest tsunami in human history and the deadliest disaster in modern history.  It's one of the longest duration of faulting, which lasted for 10 minutes.  The earthquake triggered a gigantic tsunam...

SALINAS SALT SPRING

Image
22 December 2025 For millions of years, a mountain in the town of Bambang, Nueva Vizcaya produced salt. It was called the Salinas Salt Springs. It was a geographical protrusion on the landscape that looked like a strangely shaped hill, only it was covered in glimmering salt. From afar, the Salinas Salt Spring looked like a shiny gem in the middle of a forested mountain. It was so beautiful it had been listed as one of the natural wonders of the world, according to the Philippine Information Agency.  For centuries, people in Bambang made their livelihood around the salt-producing mountain. They cultivated saltwater fish in saltwater ponds found on terraces they built around the spring. They also mined the mineral-rich salt and sold it to lowlanders. The strange geographical feature, also called travertine, had been a popular tourist attraction since the time of the Spanish colonization of the Philippines. It was the Spaniards who named it Salinas, which literally means saltworks or ...

Typical kitchen utensils By Duoi Ampilan    Takuri used to boil water.

25 December 2024 My Curiosity About Jesus, Mary & Christmas  (From cultural, religious & personal perspectives) #Note: This is a long narrative. Read first before making conclusion. #Consideration: I am not a religious scholar nor a representative of my faith. I wrote this piece based on my belief, understanding, reading & research. I don't intend to contradict with someone's ideas & conviction.   📌 FORMATIVE YEARS I was raised in the rural setting then grew up and exposed to multicultural communities with people embracing Islam and Christianity. I was earlier confused but later, I gradually discovered things and adapted to my environment but conscious about my background, belief and that of others. One of the most popular celebrations in the Philippines (and in the Universe) is the Christmas. It is celebrated longest in the Philippines from 01 Sep up to 3 months thereafter.  Our parents, elders and religious scholars helped us to understand why in o...

WALA PAY SM

17 December 2024 by caloy bueno  Let's say that both sides of the conflict between warring political entities have glaring deficiencies or even liabilities. Any rational person would agree that to effectively remedy such a situation, there is ready recourse to the standards for adequately settling such matters ~ through the justice system (the rule of law). Serious culpabilities have to be addressed and righted, and innocence has to be duly recognized and upheld (or the lack thereof). Otherwise, such an untenable situation would only tend to worsen, and may even become disastrous for everyone, including the clueless public.   Back when there was no social media yet (i.e., still no Internet), the mainstream (or now termed "legacy") mass media virtually ruled the public sphere of influence. "Virtually" ~ because the actual rulers were those who owned and controlled such mass media, or had consummately bought its 'loyalty' and services. Still, the peop...

BANGUNGOT SA TANGHALING TAPAT

17 December 2024 LIVING THE NIGHTMARE Jun Abines If there is any consolation to most Filipinos about the nightmare they are witnessing under the Marcos-Romualdez-Araneta regime, that is the fact that it awakens them from the illusions that we lived in a democratic country.  In just a span of two years, the Marcos-Romualdez-Araneta tyranny was able to consolidate all the greedy parasites that made Philippines and Filipinos a poor country for a long time despite its having rich natural resources and very skilled and talented people. There's an undisguised alliance of corrupt government officials with the media, the Catholic Church, the CPP-NPA-NDF, the Druglords, the Criminal syndicates and the Oligarchs to suck dry the Filipino nation. Our government money is now being hijacked upfront. Under the leadership of Speaker Martin Romualdez, the House of Representatives openly stole our money for everyone to see. Our government properties are sold to oligarchs with no transparency. No cov...

11 December 2024 Rep. There is no other office mandated to audit and examine the expenditure of public funds, only the Commission on Audit," pahayag ni Rep. Marcoleta. "Sabi ko, bakit po natin ginagawa ang trabaho ng COA? Kayo naman, Commission on Audit, bakit ninyo sinurender ang inyong tungkulin? May problema dito, sabi ko, nilalabag natin ang Saligang Batas," dagdag pa niya.

OI ILANG POTBOLON ANG BISE P?

11 December 2024 Lifted from FB Highlighted excerpt from the article “Our patriots in the intelligence community should intensely investigate if reports that the Marcos regime have allied with the communist are true as this would be pure treason of the vilest kind: Partnering with the communists to neutralize the Dutertes just for his Marcos-Romualdez clan to continue in power.” Communists: Marcos' ally in impeachment to oust Sara Opinion by Rigoberto D. Tiglao, The Manila Times, December 6, 2024 LOOK at it objectively and rid yourself of their very successful propaganda — started way back in the 1960s — that they are crusading "progressives," "people's organizations" or "cause-oriented groups." Nearly all of those who claim to be such are communist or leftist groups, who have expertly manipulated the democratic process to obtain at least roughly 1 million votes to win a seat in the House of Representatives. The persons who filed the second impeach...

MT. MATUTUM

Image
9 December 2024 Lifted from Duoi Ampilan  Mount Matutum  The most prominent landmark in South Cotabato is the majestic Mt Matutum, a symmetrical volcano rising to 2,293 meters (other literatures said 2,286m).  It is located in Tupi, South Cotabato in the island of Mindanao. Its last recorded eruption was in 1911. There is a pineapple plantation surrounding the volcano giving a more panoramic scene. Philippines is the 3rd biggest producers of pineapples - thanks to the biggest companies such as the Dole and the Del Monte, which established canneries and plantations in the Philippines.  You can actually see from a distance the mountain even from Maguindanao, Davao del Sur, Sarangani, Cotabato and Sultan Kudarat provinces but the best views are along the roads in Tupi and Polomolok.

PRE-COLONIAL BASILAN

Image
Lifted from Joel Lopez Precolonial Basilan: A Tapestry of Indigenous Cultures and Early Trade   Basilan, a Philippine island province with a rich cultural heritage, boasts a history that stretches back centuries before the arrival of Spanish colonizers. While precolonial Basilan's history is not as extensively documented as later periods, historical accounts, oral traditions, and archaeological findings offer valuable insights into the island's early life and its diverse indigenous communities.   The Yakan People: Early Inhabitants and Their Origins   The Yakan people are believed to have been the island's original inhabitants, arriving in the Sulu archipelago around 300 BCE to 200 BCE. Little is known about their pre-Spanish history, but they remain the largest ethnic group on the main island of Basilan. Oral traditions suggest that the Yakans may have had contact with the Kingdom of Champa in present-day Vietnam, with some Yakans claiming ancestry from Champa settlers...

1 December 2024 Philippine News Today  By: Jose Alejandrino BATTLE LINES ARE CLEARER As the People Power Movement keeps growing and the BBM government position clearer, here are the battle lines: * President Bongbong Marcos-FL Liza Araneta-House Speaker Martin Romualdez vs VP Inday Sara-former president Rodrigo Duterte. * AFP Cos Gen. Romeo Brawner vs People Power. * House of Representatives vs People Power  * Cabinet officials led by Exec Sec Lucas Bersamin vs People Power  While the position of the PNP chief is not yet known, it is assumed he will follow the orders of Bongbong Marcos to suppress People Power. If there is bloodshed, expect US intervention. My guess is the Trump gov’t will side with the Filipino people.
